Whiskered tern

Characteristics

The whiskered tern has a black bill and feet, and is white from the head to the neck and from the chest down. Black vertical patterns adorn the crown, and black patches connect the nape and the region behind the eyes. Its back is light gray. Habits: The whiskered tern feeds on fish, shrimp, aquatic insects, or fishpond feeds. When the birds are foraging, they approach the water surface and fly low. Winter/Common; Transit/Common; Body length: 66 cm Birdwatching period: November-April

Distribution

The whiskered tern appears in seashores, estuaries, fishponds, saltpans, lakes, and marshes. The birds often form small flocks consisting of dozens of individuals. When they transit, there are large flocks consisting of hundreds of individuals.
